We bring the 'Pirates' to our festival...
In 2008 our Sponsors reached over 8,000 festival participants, some from as far away as Canada! Their company brands were displayed in regional and local publications like The Dallas Morning News, on Jack FM radio spots as well as on a website that linked to other festival sites across the nation and globally. To bring the message to our own community we participated in city and school events throughout the summer and fall. Our festival 'Pirate' characters even appeared at National Night Outs in several neighborhoods.

Real History of the Pirate Days of Texas Festival…
Pirate Days of Texas is a themed festival that evolved from a festival that was founded in 1987 by a former mayor of The Colony. Through the years, it was an arts and crafts and music festival.
In 2007,Allison Mihavics, the former director of The Colony Chamber of Commerce was researching festivals. and learned that the most successful were “themed”. One interesting piece of research started the committee down a historical path to the era of 1812 - 1814. The movie, The Buccaneer, staring Charlton Heston and Yul Brenner, about Jean Lafitte, the pirate who helped Andrew Jackson during the battle of New Orleans, led the festival committee to delve a little deeper into the life and times of Jean Lafitte. After considerable research, the pirate theme was decided upon.
From the historical record, the committee followed the Texas connection of privateers Jean and Pierre Lafitte and one of their Captains James Campbell. The LaFitte brothers left the islands off the Louisiana coast in 1817 and spent some time in Campeche what is now Galveston Island. Pierre eventually had a business relationship with James Bowie. James Campbell left the sea and became a cattle baron in south east Texas on land that was part of the now famous King Ranch. Jean Lafitte could not stay away from the sea and is believed to have died after being wounded in a sea battle somewhere in the Gulf possibly off the coast of Honduras.
With history on their side, the committee went to work formulating the former festival into “Pirate Days of Texas”. A myth, based on the Texas LaFitte connection was written to tell a story of two crew members and a “lady” acquaintance and their escapades. Since The Colony is located on the eastern shore of Lake Lewisville, one of the best recreational lakes in Texas, the committee found a fictional way to explain just how the crew managed to arrive here. The Tribute Golf Resort, which is a replica of St. Andrews in Scotland and a leading attraction in The Colony gave the committee a “Scottish” connection to enhance the myth. All of this (and the fertile imagination of the committee) brought area history into the development of the myth, the characters and location. . . . . . . . And the rest has become part of The Colony’s history
